Retinoids in Skin Care Products - How to prevent Its Side Effects

Retinoids are exquisite skin care ingredients and are used extensively in anti aging skin care products. They are derivatives of Vitamin A and help your skin to deal with a variety of problems including acne, premature aging, aging signs and hyperpigmentation.

Retinoids have suited exfoliant properties and help accelerate the skin renovation process by normalizing the skin cell growth. It also stimulates the collagen production within the skin cells and help to keep them clean, thus preventing skin conditions like acne.

However, inspite of all these skin care benefits, retinoids are strong ingredients that are known to cause side effects in many people. And one of its most coarse side effects if irritation, especially in women with sensitive skin. Retinoids work by exfoliating your skin inside out, while which, your skin can become increasingly sensitive. As a result, you may taste peeling skin, redness and flaking. Many citizen also report acne flare ups while the starting phase of using retinoids.

Purging or Breaking Out?

The side effects of retinoids may vary from someone to person. While some women may taste purging, others may be simply breaking out. To know either you are purging or simply breaking out, see where your break-outs are occurring. Purging is the worsening of the existent acne symptoms. For instance, if your skin pores are clogged, they may build into fully grown pimples or if you have small whiteheads, they may get more inflamed.

If you are experiencing acne at unusual places i.e. Areas where you don't generally break out or if your break outs are in the form of tiny red clusters, it may be an allergic reaction. In this case, you may need to consult your dermatologist.

Tips to Use Retinoid based Skin Care Products

Start Slow

While using retinoid based skin care products, start slow! If you taste any allergic reaction or skin irritation after applying the retinoid product, think giving your skin a break. Wait for at least 1-2 weeks before you start applying the goods again. This will give your skin sufficient time to calm down and adjust to the foreign product.

Start in Summers

It is advisable to start using retinoid treatments in the summer season instead of the winter. This is because the cold temperatures and chilly winds of the winter season make the skin dry and exacerbates the side effects like irritation and skin dryness.

Avoid Sun Exposure

Retinoids tend to growth the skin's susceptibility towards sunlight and makes it very vulnerable to Uv damage. As a result, there are increased chances of you getting sun burns and other such signs of sun damage if you venture out in the sun while using retinoid skin care products. In fact, the Uv rays of the sun can penetrate through windows and influence your skin even when you stay indoors. Thats why it is advised to wear a broad spectrum sunscreen throughout the day. It will safe your skin against the Uva as well as the Uvb rays of the sun. Also, try using retinoid products at the night time so that your skin doesn't have any immediate fear of increased sun susceptibility.

Avoid using Exfoliants

While using retinoid based skin care products, avoid using any scrubs or exfoliants. This is because apart from scraping off the layer of dead skin cells, exfoliants also tend to make your skin more sensitive and irritated. In fact, retinoids themselves have potent exfoliant properties and make sure that the dead skin layer is not formed and your skin pores remain clean.

Avoid while Pregnancy

Do not use retinoid while you are pregnant r trying to conceive. Like other skin care products, retinoids are also absorbed within the skin surface, its best to avoid it and be safe.
